The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has decided to nominate its own presidential candidate, party General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara said.
Mr. Jayasekara noted that he had informed the Elections Commission in writing regarding this move. "We had taken this decision during the SLFP Central Committee meeting two weeks ago," the SLFP General Secretary told Times Online.
During this week's annual convention of the party, its leader President Maithripala Sirisena said that the SLFP would form the next government.
Responding to a query on the proposed alliance with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Mr Jayasekara said that talks would however continue to take place between both parties.
The SLPP has nominated former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as their presidential candidate.
