Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has refuted news reports that he would resign from his position if a new Prime Minister is appointed in an unconstitutional manner.
Issuing a statement, the Speaker's office said that certain local and social media reports which had been published today, did not cite a source, and had been written based on assumptions.
"The Speaker will never bear a stance of that nature and has not made such statements," the statement read, noting that the Speaker would not hesitate to take action through the Parliament against any undemocratic action.
Commenting on today's media reports which referred to the "unlawful appointment" of a Prime Minister in October last year, the Speaker said he "does not believe that such a situation would arise again."
