Speaker Karu Jayasuriya informed the Parliament today that he has no powers vested under the Constitution or in keeping up with the Parliamentary tradition to make any changes into the current Opposition Leader post.
Accordingly, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leader R Sampanthan is to remain as the leader of the opposition despite the demand put forwarded by Joint Opposition (JO) Parliamentarians seeking Opposition Leader post. At least seventy Parliamentarians elected under United Peoples Freedom Front (UPFA) ticket claimed that they have the majority in the House therefore post should be given to them.
