Speaker Karu Jayasuriya temporarily suspended Parliament sittings a short while ago to hold a Party Leaders’ Meeting.
The Speaker suspended the sittings after Opposition MPs protested against a statement he made this morning in response to criticisms levelled by President Maithripala Sirisena in Parliament yesterday regarding the conduct of the Constitutional Council (CC) when appointing judges.
President Sirisena claimed that the CC had rejected 12 names he had sent to be appointed as judges.
However, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, responding to the President’s statement yesterday, rejected the President’s allegations.
