Speaker to make statement on national government today

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya will make a special statement today in Parliament regarding the validity of the national government. 

The Speaker told Parliament yesterday that he would make a statement today when Opposition MPs questioned him yesterday whether the national government was still in existence given the political crisis that engulfed the government in the aftermath of the Local Government Elections. 

The Opposition argued that since the agreement on the national government was signed for a period of two years, Parliament should be notified in writing that whether that agreement had been extended. 

The Speaker stated that he had so far not received any communication on whether the national government continues and that he would look into the matter and inform the House.
