Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has requested National Election Commission (EC) Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya to complete his term instead of going on retirement.
This was after the EC Chairman wrote to Speaker Jayasuriya who heads the Constitutional Council (CC), expressing his decision to retire from his post, according to the Speaker's Office.
The CC is tasked with apppointing the heads of independent commissions.
In his response, Mr. Jayasuriya told Mr. Deshapriya that it would be important for him to remain in office to oversee the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Hailing, Mr. Deshapriya for his committed service, Speaker Jayasuriya pointed out that the NEC chief's leadership was necessary to restructure the electoral system.
Mr. Deshapriya, upon the conclusion of the presidential election, voiced his intention to retire from service.
