Speaker's Office claims he is not in quarantine

News

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena's office has refuted reports that he had been directed to quarantine by health authorities due to being a first contact of a COVID-19 patient.

Issuing a statement, the Speaker's Office claimed that a police officer temporarily assigned from Police Headquarters to his security detail had tested positive for COVID-19. The officer had been assigned after a backup vehicle in the Speaker's security detail developed mechanical trouble.

PCR tests conducted on police officers who were first contacts of the officer concerned have come back negative. However, health authorities had informed that those officers should still be in self-quarantine for 14 days. Accordingly, a group of new officers have been assigned to the Speaker in their place, the statement said.

The Speaker's Office added that Mr Abeywardena will return to his duties as usual from tomorrow, January 1.
