The special cabinet meeting believed to have been centered on the abolition of the Executive President has ended in a stalemate.
During today's meeting, it is reported that a majority of the ministers had cited that discussing the matter while the Presidential polls was announced is inappopriate. The special Cabinet meeting had been called for by President Sirisena.
The United National Front had included the abolition of the executive presidency as one of their key promises during the run-up to the presidential polls in 2015.
Minister Mano Ganesan, speaking to reporters after the meeting, said that most of the ministers had stressed the need to win the upcoming presidential elections.
The Election Commission yesterday (Sept 18) issued a gazette notification announcing that the polls would be held on November 16.
