The special operation which is underway to apprehend drunk drivers is to be extended until the end of this year, Police Motor Traffic DIG Ajith Rohana said.
As of today (Jul 24), 5011 drivers have been arrested for drunk driving offences after the operation began on July 5, he observed. Initially, the operation was expected to be in effect for a month.
However, DIG Rohana said it would be extended due to the high number of drunk driving cases which have been reported so far.
At present, around 8000 police officers have been deployed to assist in the operations. This figure is expected to be increased upto about 15,000, the Traffic DIG stated.
