The Railway department and National Transport Commission (NTC) have decided to introduce more long-distance buses and traisn during the new year festive season.
The additional busses around 3000 will start operation from Bastian Mawatha bus stand strating on April 08 to 15 and from the bus stations in other areas from April 15 to 25.
The Western Province Transport Authority had also promised to operate buses from Katunayake, Biyagama, Avissawella, Piliyandala, Matugama, Horana, Panadura and Maharagama for the benefit of garment factory workers.
Buses operating on the Southern Expressway would commence journey at 5.00 am from Kadawatha, Maharagama and Kaduwela during the festive season, Hemachandra said. Extra buses would also operate from the Bastian Mawatha Bus Stand to Matara, Akuressa, Deniyaya, Deiyandara, Hakmana and Kataragama.
Colombo-Kandy AC buses will operate via Katunayake - Colombo Expressway via Minuwangoda and Nittambuwa. No additional fare would be charged. Total of 6,000 buses would operate on outstation routes during the festive season.
Meanwhile Department of Railway has taken measures to operate special trains during the Sinhala and Hindu New Year period. The special train service will be in operation from April 10.
A train will leave Colombo Fort at 7.30 p.m. on April 10, 12, 17 and 19 to Bandarawela. while a Colombo bound train will leave for Bandarawela at 6.15 a.m. on April 13,18 and 20.
A train will leave the Colombo Fort station to Veyangoda at 8.00 a.m. on April 14 while another train will leave Colombo Fort to Jaffna at 10.00 p.m. on April 12.
A train will leave Colombo Fort to Mahawa at 1.05 p.m. on April 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 while a train will leave Veyangoda at 9.30 a.m. to Kalutara South on April 14.
A train will leave Veyangoda at 4.00 p.m. to Colombo Fort on April 14 while a train will leave Veyangoda at 12.25 p.m. to Kalutara South on April 14. Another train will leave Kalutara South at 1.00 p.m. to Veyangoda on April 14 while a a train will leave Kalutara South at 9.20 a.m. to Veyangoda on April 14.
Meanwhile, a train will leave Kalutara South at 3.20 p.m. to Maradana on April 14 while another train will leave Maradana at 7.40 a.m. to Kalutara South on April 14.
A train will leave Jaffna at 8.00 p.m. to Colombo Fort on April 17 while a Colombo bound train will leave for Mahawa at 5.10 p.m. on April 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. A train will leave Maradana at 9.20 a.m. to Galle on April 12, 13 and 17.
