Sri Lanka’s Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) has cancelled a media conference called for Wednesday to discuss the proposed National Payment Platform (NPP), after its CEO Muhunthun Canagey resigned from the post on Tuesday.
The briefing had been called to discuss the NPP and ICTA’s ongoing projects. Canegey resigned on Friday August 11 in a controversy over ‘telecom spectrum’ and other issues. ICTA officials confirmed the meeting has been put off.
Making the announcement on Monday, in his official facebook page, Canagey had stated that he was asked by President Maithipala Sirisena to resign from his position as CEO of ICTA. His post said, “I have officially resigned from the position of CEO and Managing Director of ICTA. I was informed by Minister of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure, Harin Fernando that President Maithripala Sirisena has requested me to resign.”
Canagey’s post on social media further stated that the reason for the President to ask him to resign came after he had questioned the issuing of spectrum worth US$25 million to Capital Maharaja during the current President's term of office without any public auction or tender. The spectrum should have been used for digitization, he has stated. Canagey took over office as the CEO in 2015. His 2--page of resignation had been addressed to the ICTA Chairperson, members of the board, senior management, colleagues and friends.
Meanwhile Caney also founded a company Duo World Inc where he lists his name as "Muhunthan Canagasooryam". Duo World newly listed its shares on the New York OTC Markets. (BS)
