Sri Lanka welcomed the Joint Opposition candidate Mohamed Solih securing victory following the Presidential election in the Maldives yesterday where the people exercised their franchise in a decisive manner to uphold their commitment to democracy and the rule of law,Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
“We commend the government and the people of the Maldives for the conduct of a successful election process that was free, fair, and peaceful,” a statement from the ministry said.
Although the Election Commission has not as yet announced the final results, the government said “we congratulate Mr. Solih on his victory and look forward to working closely with him and the people of the Maldives in pursuing the elevation of relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka to greater heights.”
