A Sri Lankan crew member of a foreign airline has been arrested while attempting to smuggle 423 gold bangles worth Rs 21.5 million today (Mar 11).
The arrest was carried out by officials attached to the Customs Narcotics Unit at the Bandaranaike International Airport when the suspect had arrived from Qatar on flight QR 664 at 10 am.
Gold bangles weighing 4043 grams were concealed inside the suspect's travelling bag, customs officials said adding that the suspect has been identified as a 28-year old resident of Ratnapura.
Further investigations are being carried out under the directives of Customs Additional Director Saman Ranawana and Customs Director (Airport) M.A. Karunaratne.
