At least 18 Sri Lankan fishermen who were released after being arrested in India for trespassing its waters, returned to the country this morning (Oct 30).
The fishermen from Eluvaitivu in Jaffna were taken into custody early this month by the Indian Coast Guard.
They were released on humanitarian grounds following communications made through diplomatic channels to the relevant authorities.
However, six fishing boats used by them are under the custody of Indian authorities.
Last week, the relatives of these fishermen, staged a protest opposite the Jaffna District Secretariat and the Indian Consular General’s office in Jaffna demanding their release.
