The Government has decided that university students to remit Mahapola Scholarship money directly to the bank accounts of students on the 15th of every month, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena stated.
Mr Gunawardena said however, the Mahapola Scholarship Fund was down to just Rs.10.5 billion now and efforts need to be made to draw more money to it.
Accordingly, the Government is aiming to introduce a new lottery exclusively for the Mahapola fund. The Minister also said they would start holding the Mahapola exhibition and trade fair again soon in order to raise money for the fund. "We are also making a public appeal to former students who are beneficiaries of the Mahapola fund and who are working or studying abroad now to contribute if they can to the fund," he added.
