Students who were affected due to the Easter Sunday attacks are yet to receive their Suraksha Insurance payouts, the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) claims.
"According to reports received so far 30 students have died while 24 have either lost one or both their parents," Joseph Stalin, CTU General Secretary said in a press release.
Mr. Stalin noted that efforts to obtain the relevant payments by contacting the regional education offices and the Western Province Department of Education have proven futile.
According to the Education Ministry, a compensation of Rs 200,000 and Rs 150,000 will be provided as compensation for the death of a parent and student respectively.
Mr. Stalin also claimed that students who had become differently-abled also have not received their payouts which range up to Rs 200,000.
"The agreement signed between Allianz Insurance Ltd (and the government) to provide insurance is also due to expire by November 30," the CTU Secretary pointed out.
Accordingly, Mr. Stalin urged the Education Ministry to take swift measures in order to disburse the required compensation since the process has already been delayed for more than two months.
