Summon IGP to Parliament regarding assassination plot - Fonseka urges

Speaking in Parliament, UNP MP Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka vehemently denied allegations said to have been leveled by President Maithripala Sirisena that Fonseka was behind an alleged assassination plot against him and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa. 

Field Marshal Fonseka said the President was getting his information from an intelligence operative named Namal Kumara, who was now attempting to contest a General Election from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP). 

The UNP MP urged that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) be summoned to Parliament and questioned in order to get to the bottom of the matter. 

Field Marshal Fonseka said he had also read media reports claiming that the President had said that he would never appoint Fonseka as PM. He said he never dreamed of becoming PM and did not know why the President was dreaming about him being PM.

However, the MP pointed out that President Sirisena had earlier alleged that Mahinda Rajapaksa had plotted to kill him. "Yet, he appointed Rajapaksa as the PM. If so, why am I, who he also accuses of plotting to kill him, not being made PM? Why is he treating me differently?" he quipped.
