The Supreme Court today (Nov 29) issued an interim order preventing Anthony Jayamaha -- a pardoned murder convict -- from travelling overseas until December 11.
The order was issued when a petition filed by the Women and Media Collective (WMC) organisation against the pardon was taken up for hearing before a three-judge bench today.
Jayamaha, convicted of murdering Swedish teenager Yvonne Jonsson at the Rajagiriya Royal Park apartment in 2005, was granted presidential pardon by former President Maithripala Sirisena during his last days in office early this month.
He was sentenced to death by the Appeal Court in 2012, but had his term reduced to a life imprisonment, following a review in 2016.
Claiming President Sirisena's decision undermined the Rule of Law, the WMC in its petition urges the Supreme Court to suspend the presidential pardon.
Sirisena's move came under heavy criticism from the victim's family and civil society members.
