The Attorney General is to indict Supreme Court Justice Sarath de Abrew for grave sexual misconduct following a complaint made by his female domestic help few months back.
Indictment papers were due to be issued today in the Colombo High Court and separately in the Mount Lavinia court where a case is already pending.
This is the first time in the country's judiciary that a sitting Supreme Court judge is being indicted on a criminal offense. Justice de Abrew was accused by his domestic help of sexually molesting her at his residence.
Police filed action against him in a lower court but now the Attorney General has brought him before a higher court on graver charges.
A Supreme Court judge can only be removed by Parliament but if he is convicted of a criminal offense he may face a jail sentence. Justice de Abrew denies any wrong doing.
