The hearing of submissions on the President's application seeking an opinion on the law to conduct the provincial council polls ended at the Supreme Court today (Aug 23).
Accordingly, the Supreme Court opinion will be forwarded to the President by a five-member judge bench headed by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya before August 31.
President Maithripala Sirisena hd sought the Supreme Court's opinion on whether the provincial elections could be held under the Proportional Representation system which existed before the Provincial Councils (Amendment) Act was passed in 2017.
Thirteen intervening petitions had been filed over this application.
