Suspect who evaded police for 14 years finally caught

A suspect in an abduction case who had been evading police for 14 years has been arrested in Nonagama, Ambalanthota, Marawila police said. 

An open warrant had been issued for the suspect's arrest in 2003, but efforts made thus far to arrest him had proved futile. 

Police said this was mostly because the suspect had used a forged birth certificate and National Identity Card which enabled him to live under a false identity. 

Police said the suspect had subsequently married under his false identity and taken up residence in Nonagama, where he had been operating a welding business until his arrest. 

Police were eventually able to trace him after obtaining the phone records of a friend of the suspect.

The 41-year-old suspect is due to be produced before the Deiyandara Magistrate's Court.
