A suspect who fled to evade arrest after army officers opened fire at a vehicle which had failed to stop at a roadblock in Wadduwa, has been arrested today (Jul 30).
Another individual who had been hospitalised after sustaining injuries in the gun fire has died.
The suspects had allegedly stolen a vehicle from Mattegoda, and had ignored signals given out by army officers to stop the vehicle, after they had been informed of the theft.
The owner of the vehicle who had complained to the police about his lost vehicle, had tracked down the movements of the van with the assistance of a GPS tracker, police said.
Army officers had given chase and managed to recover the stolen vehicle with the assistance of the Walana Police Organised Crimes Preventive Division.
