A person who had offered a bribe to release a suspect allegedly linked to the banned National Thowheed Jamath (NTJ) group has been further remanded until June 18.
The individual, claiming to be a relative of the suspect, had attempted to bribe the officer-in-charge (OIC) of the Horowpathana Police in this regard.
Police have identified the relative as Mohamed Shifan while the suspected NTJ member has been identified as Abdul Majeed Mohamed Niyas.
Shifan was arrested by the Bribery Commission on May 5 upon a tip-off provided by Horowpathana OIC P.P.S.R. Sanjeewa. He had attempted to provide Rs 500,000 as a bribe before he was caught while providing Rs 250,000 of the total amount as an advance payment.
During today's court hearing, the Bribery Commission said that it was conducting further investigations on the suspect.
