Around 900 workers of tea estates coming under the Mackwoods Group on Thursday launched a protest outside the head office at Maradana (near Technical Junction) complaining about wages and other issues, police said. At the time of writing (12.45 hours), the protest which began at 9.30 am was still on and traffic had been affected due to the commotion. Officials from the company declined to comment. Sources close to the company said that the group has encountered difficulties in recent times in payment of salaries and other incentives to staff of all categories owing to a sharp fall in tea prices and rising cost of production. Tea industry sources said that several companies were facing difficulties due to falling prices with some tea factories also closing down. The Government recently said it would intervene at the Colombo Tea Auction to purchase tea and push prices up. – ENDS -
