Teachers and principals throughout the country are to report sick on Wednesday (26) in protest against the Government's failure to implement the interim salary circular for teachers and principals. Teachers' and principals' will also commence a protest march at 9.30am that day from the Buddhadasa Ground in Battaramulla. They will march to the Education Ministry where they will hold a protest demonstration.
A joint statement by the Ceylon Teachers' Union and the Ceylon Teachers' Services Union states that the protest was being conducted as the new Government had failed to honour a pledge given to them to implement the interim salary circular that had been approved by the previous Cabinet last year until the Teacher and Principals' Services were made closed services.
