Teachers and Principals have decided to go on a two-day sick leave starting from today (Jul 18) to protest over four demands, The Sri Lanka Podu Jana Education Services Union said.
Demands revolve around unresolved salary issues, pension schemes, additional workload for teachers, and the government’s failure to allocated six percent of the Gross Domestic Production (GDP) for the education sector.
“Twelve teachers unions would be engaged in the strike,” Wasantha Hadapangoda, the union Chairman said.
However, the Ceylon Teachers Services Union (CTSU) has said that it would not support the strike along with 27 other unions. “There are only seven unions which are taking part in this strike,” Mahinda Jayasinghe, the CTSU General Secretary said.
In addition, General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Union Joseph Stalin also said that his union would not be taking part in the strike.
