A 17-year-old youth was killed when the motorbike he was riding during the curfew period hit an ambulance at Dauvilana Junction in Veyangoda this afternoon.
Police stated that the deceased, who was riding the motorbike on the road in violation of the curfew, had ignored police orders to stop at Veyangoda town and had fled towards Kalagedihena when it crashed into an ambulance belonging to a private hospital that was transporting some of its staff. The ambulance had fled the scene after the incident and the youth had died at the scene. A pillion rider who was also on the motorbike has been admitted to the Wathupitiwala Hospital for treatment.
The deceased is a victim of Nungamuwa, Pallewela. Based on CCTV footage obtained from the area, Veyangoda Police were able to apprehend the ambulance in Yakkala and arrest the driver and his assistant. Veyangoda Police are conducting further investigations.
