The Sri Lankan government has decided to remove the 25 per cent telecommunication levy imposed on Internet (broadband) services with the aim of encouraging active online participation of youth.
This was announced by Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera at a media conference in Colombo a short while ago, on Thursday. The cancellation of the levy will come into effect from September 1.
The Government came under heavy criticism in the recent past over increasing the tax on Internet data owing to a 25 per cent levy imposed in the 2017 budget by former Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake.
The new move is also aimed at encouraging digital commerce activities in the country in accordance with the Prime Minister’s recent statement on economic policy. (Bandula)
