At least ten local fishermen arrested by Navy yesterday in two separate incidents for engaging in illegal fishing activities, the Navy said.
Naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command in Mullaitivu apprehended 8 local fishermen who engaged in illegal fishing activities in the seas off Nayaru yesterday. Along with the suspects 2 dinghies, a diving mask, a GPS unit and an unauthorized fishing net were taken into naval custody.
The apprehended persons and their items were produced to Mullaitivu Police for further investigations.
Meanwhile in a separate incident, Naval personnel belong to North Central Naval Command in Nachchikuda in arrested two local fishermen who engaged in illegal fishing practices using monofilament nets in the sea area of Wediththalathive yesterday. Along with the suspects a dinghy, a GPS unit and an unauthorized fishing net were also taken into naval custody.
The apprehended persons and items were handed over to the Mannar Fisheries Inspector for further action.
