Ten local fishermen who were engaging in illegal fishing at two separate locations yesterday arrested by Navy. Accordingly, eight persons who engaged in illegal fishing practices in the seas off Kathiraweli using unauthorized nets were arrested by the naval personnel attached to Eastern Naval Command in Vakarai.
Along with the suspects 2 dinghies and a Monofilament Net used for fishing activities were taken into naval custody. The apprehended fishermen and their belongings were handed over to the Vakarai Police for further investigations.
On the same day, naval personnel attached to SLNS Buwaneka located in Nachchikuda in the North Central Naval Command arrested another 2 local fishermen with a traditional boat (Wallam) and a Monofilament Net while fishing illegally in the seas off Padeithurei. The arrested persons long with the boat were produced to the Fisheries Inspector in Mannar for onward action.
