Fishermen today staged a major protest blocking the Puttalam - Kalpitiya road against what they called the alleged use of illegal nets by a section of persons involved in the fisheries industry.
The protest came hours after a group of fishermen took control of lorry carrying some 4000 Killos of fish and dumped the stock on the road side after claiming that the vehicle was carrying fish caught by illegal nets.
The protesting fisherman were blocking Puttalam - Kalpitiya Road holding their protest for the second day.
They said that despite previous protests the authorities had not taken action to stop the practice of use of illegal nets.
