The support extended by Muslim religious leaders and state leaders on formulating laws against fundamentalism is a testament to show that there is no room for such ideologies in the country, Speaker Karu Jaysuriya said yesterday (May 19).
Issuing a special statement to the people and the parliamentary sitting committees, the Speaker said that he was delighted by the manner in which Vesak was celebrated while ignoring fake reports which spread panic among the public.
Speaker Jayasuriya also requested the people to carry on with their day-to-day activities and also to send their children to school without displaying any form of hesitation.
The statement pointed out that the highlight of this year's Vesak celebrations was the participation of the Catholics and the Muslims in the festivities.
Accordingly, Mr. Jayasuriya stressed that any unscrupulous force must not be given room to destroy the unity and the honour of the brotherhood among all communities in the country.
