Three people have died following an accident involving an army jeep and a three-wheel along the A9 road near the Iyakachchi junction in Jaffna at 5:30 pm today (Jan 08).
According to the police, the accident had occured when the three-wheel which was travelling towards Kandy had collided with the jeep that was travelling in the opposite direction.
The driver of the three-wheel and two passengers were admitted to the Palai Hospital following which they succumbed to their injuries.
Police have identified the victims as 36-year old Perumal Jayakumar - the driver of the three-wheel, 32-year old Gunaratnam Gunadas and 26-year old Sivapalan Radeeswaran.
The driver of the jeep has been taken into custody by the police and is expected to be produced before the Kilinochchi Magistrates Court tomorrow.
A post-mortem examination on the remains of the victims will be carried out at the Kilinochchi hospital tomorrow.
Palai police are conducting further investigations into the accident.
