Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) today (Oct 8) launched two hotlines to file complaints on instances during which public resources are misused for election campaigning.
Complaints in this regard can be submitted to 076 322 3662 and 076 322 3442 or via e-mail to pppr@tisrilanka.org, TISL Executive Director Asoka Obeysekere said in a statement.
The Programme for the Protection of Public Resources (PPPR) which is TISL's election monitoring arm has appointed 25 district level observers who would be co-ordinating 160 observers in each electorate at the upcoming presidential election.
TISL, in its statement, called on all candidates, political parties, public officials and the media to ensure compliance with regulations and circulars issued by the Elections Commission.
"Failure to comply with directions of the Elections Commission could result in public officials facing up to 3 years imprisonment as per article 104GG of the Constitution," Obeysekere said.
He insisted that public officials should be mindful of incidents concerning the misuse of public property during elections.
