Tamil Nadu fishermen are languishing in Sri Lankan jails despite chief minister J Jayalalithaa announcing that 86 of them would be released due to her efforts, said DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Tuesday. Jayalalithaa on October 26 announced that the fishermen would be released on October 28 due to her efforts and steps were being taken for their safe return, Karunanidhi said in a statement. "But none of the fishermen was released on October 28. Remand of 33 of them was extended to November 11. The fate of 53 others will be known on November 8, 10 and 13 when they will be produced before courts in Sri Lanka," said Karunanidhi. He said the Centre should take all the steps to get their release immediately. (TNN)
