Trail 2016, which commenced from Point Pedro in Jaffna with the aim of collecting funds to build a new cancer unit for the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle, has now crossed into the North Central Province.
Participants of the walk began today's leg of the journey from Vavuniya and are due to end for the day by arriving in Medavachchiya.
At the start of Trail 2016, the goal was to collect an estimated sum of USD 5 million (Approximately Rs.735 million) for the new cancer wing. Organizers say USD1.5 million (Approximately Rs.220 million) have already been collected through donations thus far.
Trail 2016 is due to take place over 28 days and cover 670 kilometers from Point Pedro to Dondra Head.
Cricket legend and one of the Brand Ambassadors for Trail 2016, Mahela Jayawardene, is also among those taking part in the walk to collect funds.
