Two suspects who had been digging for treasure on the pretext of constructing a pond in Alawwa were taken into custody by the Special Task Force (STF) last night (18).
The suspects were arrested after STF personnel from the Pugoda STF camp raided the location at about 11.50pm last night.
STF officers discovered that the suspects had dug into a large boulder located in the land adjacent to the hotel. When questioned, the suspect claimed that they had been engaged in the digging throughout the curfew and that they were constructing a pond for the hotel. However, further interrogation revealed that the suspects had been digging with the objective of trying to find treasure said to have been buried at the location.
The suspects were handed over to the Alawwa police along with a set of digging equipment they had in their possession. They are due to be produced before the Polgahawela Magistrate's Court today (19).
