Two Sri Lankan women were arrested at the Mumbai Airport today (Feb 18) for attempting to smuggle gold worth Rs 33.1 million into India by concealing it in a small boy's jacket.
The two suspects of whom one is the boy's mother had arrived from Singapore, Indian media reported adding that the boy was found to have been in possession of 108 gold bars weighing 10.8 kilograms.
The gold was found to have been concealed in the jacket and the sports shoes of the boy.
Both women were produced before court and have been remanded until February 28 while the boy, a minor was sent to a children's home.
"As the gold is worth more than Rs 1 crore (LKR 10 million), it is a cognisable and a non-bailable offence" Special Public Prosecutor of the Indian Air Intelligence Unit Anuradha Mane said.
