Two more days will be needed to completely extinguish the fire in the MT New Diamond oil tanker, which caught fire last Thursday off the south-eastern coast of the island, Air Force spokesman Group Captain Dushan Wijesinghe said.
He said though the fire on the surface was controlled, there were fires reported in the internal areas.
He said more than 1,000 chemicals have been used today to control the fire in the internal areas of the vessel.
Meanwhile a team of experts from Singapore, who have been assigned by the shipping company, too have reached the area.
Also, a team from the Ruhunu University, Marine Environment Protection Authority and National Aquatic Research Agency has visited the location to assess the damage to marine life.
