Two persons of a VIP convoy who were involved in the assault of a van driver recently have been arrested after they surrendered before the police last night.
The suspects are Gamini Wijesuriya, the driver of the defender jeep and one of its passengers identified as Susantha Bandara.
Police had commenced investigations after some individuals who were travelling in a defender and a prado jeep attached to a VIP convoy, had allegedly assaulted a van driver after overtaking the vehicle in Kalagedihena on July 16.
The defender jeep, bearing the number WP CAD 8850, and registered under the name of Chandula Amaratunga, had been recovered from a residence in Maharagama last night.
The owner of the Prado jeep, bearing the number WP CAG 0550, has been identified as Nuwan Amaratunga, the police spokesman noted.
The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) which is probing the incident, has launched an operation to apprehend the suspects after their houses were found to have been locked when officials visited the area.
