Two petitions challenging the decision to release Ven Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero on Presidential pardon have been fixed for hearing on March 2, 2020 by the Supreme Court.
The petitions have been filed by Sandya Ekneligoda – the wife of abducted journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda, and the Centre for Policy Alternatives.
They argue that former President Maithripala Sirisena’s decision to pardon the Thero, who had been convicted for contempt of court, was unconstitutional.
At the time of his release, Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary Gnanasara Thero was serving a 19 year imprisonment term reduced to six years after he was found guilty over contempt of court.
During today’s hearing, the court ordered the petitioners to file amended petitions as the respondents had changed.
The Attorney General, Justice Minister, President's Secretary, IGP Pujith Jayasundara, Acting IGP, and the Welikada Prisons Superintendent were previously named as respondents to the petition.
