President Maithripala Sirisena will declare open the Laggala Green City and attend the completion of the Kalu Ganga reservoir to mark his fourth year in office which falls today (Jan 08).
The Laggala Green City project would provide housing to 3000 families who were affected due to the overflowing of the Kalu Ganga which resulted in the Laggala town being inundated.
The Kalu Ganga reservoir, which has a capacity of 200,000 feet, is one of the biggest reservoirs which conjoins the Moragahakanda reservoir, President's Media Director Dharmasri Ekanayake said.
He added that this reservoir is twice the size of the Parakrama samudra (reservoir). The Kalu ganga reservoir and the Moragahakanda reservoir combined are six times the size of the Parakrama Samudra, Mr. Ekanayake added.
Around 1500 acres of paddy fields are expected to receive water from the Kalu Ganga reservoir which would also benefit the residents of Laggala.
A mechanism has also been set up to supply the excess water of the reservoir to the Moragahakanda reservoir through canals.
