Two Sri Lankans arrested in Singapore for violating immigration laws

Two Sri Lankans have been sentenced to eight months of imprisonment in Singapore on January 08 over the violation of immigration laws.

The suspects were arrested by officials of the Singaporean Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) at the Changi Airport on October 28 last year.

Pararasasingam Puveenthan, 30, was arrested for the possession of a fake Canadian passport while Marimuththu Subramaniam, 48 was arrested for abetting Mr. Puveenthan to possess the fake travel document.

Issuing a press release, the ICA said that Mr. Puveenthan had sought employment outside Sri Lanka. Accordingly, he had obtained a Canadian passport through a third party agent. He was arrested since the passport which carried his photograph had not matched with his particulars.

The release further said that Mr. Subramaniam had accompanied Mr. Puveenthan to the waiting area of the Changhi Airport following which the arrest was made.

According to Section 47(6) of the Singapore Passports Act, a person who knowingly has in possession a false foreign travel document shall be guilty of an offence and if convicted, may be sentenced to a fine not exceeding USD10, 000 or an imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years or both.
