Two alleged gangsters linked to underworld leaders 'Makandure Madush' and 'Angoda Lokka' were killed in a shootout with the Police Special Task Force (STF) this afternoon at Madawala in Kandy.
Police said STF personnel had set up a snap roadblock along the at Madawala along the Teldeniya Road after a tip-off was received that the two gang members were traveling in a vehicle. They had flagged down a motor car at about 12.15pm.
As STF officers approached the vehicle, those inside had allegedly opened fire, resulting in a gunfight breaking out. The two individuals who were inside the vehicle were hit by gunfire in the firefight.
The two injured men on admission to Katugastota Hospital, were pronounced dead.
A pistol and a revolver along with ammunition were recovered from the possession of the two deceased criminals, police added.
A magisterial inquiry was conducted late this afternoon.
