The UK foreign office has warned that Sri Lanka would lose its global reputation as a tourist and business hub if the death penalty is implemented in the country.
Issuing a press release, a UK Foreign Office spokesman said that UK has been deeply concerned on reports stating thats Sri Lanka intends to implement the death penalty.
"Sri Lanka voted in favour of a global moratorium on the use of the death penalty at the UN General Assembly just six months ago," the Spokesman said while cautioning that a reversal of this policy would damage Sri Lanka's reputation.
Meanwhile, the Foreign Office has also warned that UK would be forced to review its technical assistance programmes concerning law and order, defence, and other security matters.
"The UK opposes the use of the death penalty in all circumstances as a matter of principle," the press release read while calling on the Sri Lankan government to uphold its moratorium on the punishment.
