President Maithripala Sirisena has briefed the UN Secretary General on the reasons behind the implementation of the death penalty.
Addressing an event in Polonnaruwa, the President said he had clarified these matters during a telephone conversation with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres yesterday (Jun 27) night.
Mr. Sirisena reiterated that the death penalty must be implemented in order to protect the lives of the younger generation which have been badly hit due to the usage of narcotics.
The President noted he had no personal revenge upon the four convicts against whom he had signed the death penalty recently.
Accordingly, he urged that attempts must not be made to influence and reverse this decision since he had taken it in order to prevent the younger generation from being affected by the drug menace.
