The United National Front (UNF) has expressed its strong opposition and concerns regarding the manner in which former minister Patali Champika Ranawaka was arrested.
In a special statement issued by UNP leader Ranil Wickremsinghe on behalf of the UNF, it said the traditions that have to be followed when arresting a member of Parliament too had been violated in this instance.
The statement said the arrest was carried out without informing the Speaker as well and that the arrest was carried out contrary to accepted democratic or legal norms.
Further, Mr Wickremesinghe said in the statement that Mr. Ranawaka has been arrested over a case that has already been concluded. The police have so far failed to forward any justifiable reasons for doing so.
"During the tenure of the former government we worked towards depoliticizing all institutions, including the judiciary, police and state services, " the statement said.
"However, while observing these activities happening under a government which had come to power while pledging to create a disciplined country, we observe the law, discipline and traditions being violated to achieve political aspirations," it said.
