The Parliamentary Group meeting of the United National Party (UNP) held at Sirikotha this evening (16) ended without a decision being reached on the party leadership.
The meeting was held to decide on the future of the party leadership, with the group of MPs backing Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa demanding that he also be made party leader.
However, according to Premadasa loyalists, Mr Wickremesinghe abruptly ended the meeting and walked out when the Premadasa faction asked for a vote on the party leadership.
MPs of the Premadasa camp however, remained and took an unofficial vote, in which 52 MPs who were present voted for Mr Premadasa with no one voting against.
Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and Speaker Karu Jayasuriya are due to meet next week to try and come to a final decision and resolve the dispute.
