The UNP today sought clarification from the Elections Commission if it could make use of the ‘Swan’ symbol for the proposed alliance set to contest the Parliamentary elections.
The proposed General Secretary of the new alliance Ranjith Madduma Bandara and the UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam were among those who attended the meeting with the Elections Commission.
Mr Madduma Bandara, after the meeting told reporters that they came to get a clarification regarding their party symbol, but declined to elaborate.
Mr Kariyawasam walking out of the meeting said that one of the obstacles was that if the Swan symbol is used by the alliance, the party currently using it will not be able to use it for another five years.
Both, Mr Madduma Bandara and Mr Kariyawasam said that further discussions will be held to resolve the matter.
