The United National Party (UNP) has urged supporters who have fallen victim to post-election violence to report such incidents to the UNP Headquarters in Sirikotha.
Issuing a statement, UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam observed that sporadic incidents of violence had been reported less than a day after the new President was appointed.
This was after UNP-backed presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa lost the race to Gotabaya Rajapaksa who took oaths as President today (Nov 18).
“It is tragic to note that those responsible have failed to maintain the peaceful and fair environment that we created after the 2015 presidential election,” Kariyawasam said.
He stressed it was the UNP’s duty to protect those who voted for Premadasa, from being inconvenienced, intimidated and falling victim to violence, as they had supported them during the last five years.
Accordingly, those who experience such unfortunate incidents have been asked to contact the UNP Headquarters on 011-2889378 and 077-9215299.
